English Studies includes both the study of literatures in English (English and American literatures; creative writing; women's writing; postcolonial and world literature in English; literary, cultural and film studies; and critical theory) and English language and linguistics (sociolinguistics; critical linguistics; discourse analysis; literary linguistics). We offer a single 48-credit major in English Studies to all second- and third-year students who have successfully passed their first-year courses with at least a C (minimum 53%) average. Students will simply major in English Studies, irrespective of their interest in literature or linguistics.
Our BA curriculum is designed to expose students to a rich spectrum of approaches to the study of English in a global environment and to promote a broad understanding of the effects to which English is and can be used in a variety of discursive contexts. Our courses are mostly assessed by coursework and encourage students to demonstrate their understanding of topics and course materials in independent critical and creative applications of their knowledge, in the form of presentations, essays and research projects. We aim to foster the development of skills of accurate and historically sensitive analysis, critical reading and thinking, and clear and coherent argument in both writing and speaking.
